Retail games will be sold on proprietary flash-based cartridges which feature writable partitions for storing save games, patches and DLC. Initially these cards will come in 2GB or 4 GB capacities, but Sony confirmed they will be able to increase cart sizes as manufacturing improvements make it cost effective to do so.
Expansion memory cards will also be available in 4, 8, 16 and 32GB sizes for storing music, video and games downloaded through PSN.

Vita Flash cart compared to a standard SD memory card.
Battery life has been described at 3-5 hours in gameplay, 5 hours of video playback and 9 hours of music playback.
Connectivity:
Sony has confirmed that there will be models available with or without 3G cellular connectivity. The Vita is not a phone but would use 3G for data allowing users to connect to PSN or browse the web anywhere there they have cellular coverage. Sony has partnered exclusively with AT&T in the US to provide cellular data plans for the 3G model, no contract required.
Sony has also described a system of social/location-based interaction called “Near” allowing PS Vita users to find and connect with nearby players using the built in GPS, wifi and cellular radios. The geolocation functions are powered by Skyhook Wireless. All version of the Vita will have wifi, only the 3G models will have GPS, but Skyhook uses a vast database of wifi hotspots to reliably detect location without cellular triangulation of GPS.
Other than the web browser, Sony has announced social applications for Facebook, Twitter, Skype and FourSquare.
Operating System:

Sony has built a new interface from the ground up for touch-based control.
While the PSP, PS3 and even some Sony televisions use the cross-media bar (or XMB) as the primary interface, the Vita’s interface is completely new. XMB was optimized for scrolling through lists of items with a d-pad or analog stick, the PS Vita interface emphasises touch controls. In the screens shown so far the Vita OS displays applications as icons that can be selected with a single touch. The screen above also shows three dots on the left, with the first highlighted suggesting multiple screens of installed applications that can be swiped between. The blue dot with a “3″ on it in the upper right corner is a notification indicator indicating unseen alerts for messages, updates, etc.
At their Pre-TGS conference in September of 2011, Sony also demonstrated video and music playback, including multitasking which allows music to be played in the background, or the web browser to be loaded while a game is running.
Sony has not released many technical details about the OS, other than to confirm it is optimized for games allowing low level access to hardware. Developers have also confirmed it is not based on Android as had been speculated.
Backwards Compatibility:
Sony has demonstrated compatibility both with Playstation 1 titles and original PSP titles sold via PSN. A digital download version of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd was demonstrated live on the Vita at the Playstation Meeting 2011 by Jun Takeuchi from Capcom. The version he played used both analog sticks, something not possible on the original PSP version suggesting some titles may be updated for the Vita.
